ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews recommend businesses they keep meeting outside your own website: in Google reviews, directory listings, Reddit threads, and articles that mention your name. Win those places and the AI answers start naming you. Your Maps ranking alone is not enough, and I can show you that with my own case.

The short version

  • AI Overviews and ChatGPT build recommendations from reviews, your website, directories, and community mentions, not from your Maps position.
  • Ranking first on Google Maps does not guarantee a mention. I rank first for my area and the AI Overview still names three other people.
  • Reddit is the second most cited source in AI Overviews, which is why one thread can outweigh a better portfolio [verify].
  • Reviews are the heaviest single signal: count, rating, freshness, and whether you reply.
  • Most of this is off page SEO. The work happens on other websites, not yours.
  • None of it is instant. Mentions build over months, which is exactly why they are trusted.

In this post

A client asked me last month why her competitor “comes up on ChatGPT” and she does not. I did not have a tidy answer, so I went and dug into how these tools pick names, and I tested it on myself. This post is what I found, including the part where the result embarrassed me. I write as a digital marketing freelancer in Chennai, so every example here is local and checkable.

People ask AI before they ask Google now

The change is simple. Instead of typing “salon anna nagar” and scrolling, people now ask a question and accept a short answer with three or four names in it. The question might go to ChatGPT, or it might go to Google itself, where AI Overviews sits above every normal result.

Being one of those three or four names is the new version of ranking first. Being absent means the customer never scrolls far enough to find you, because the answer already satisfied them.

Google says AI Overviews runs on the same core ranking systems as normal search, and its own guidance is that there is no special markup or trick for it. You can read that yourself in Google’s AI features documentation. What the guidance does not spell out is why two businesses with similar websites get treated so differently. That part becomes obvious when you look at a real answer.

What I found when I checked my own area

On 12 September 2026 I searched “best digital marketing freelancer in anna nagar chennai” and an AI Overview appeared at the top. It named three people. I was not one of them.

The Overview read: “Top digital marketing freelancers and local specialists targeting Anna Nagar, Chennai include independent professionals like Nahidha Ashiq and FredyFlex, alongside broader Chennai-based independent consultants Hanish Adrian and agency alternatives in the area.” The cited source was the first freelancer’s own website, plus two others.

That stung a little, because for the plain search “digital marketing freelancer in anna nagar chennai” my profile sits first on Google Maps.

Google Maps result ranking first while AI Overviews names other freelancers for the same area
My listing ranking first on Maps for the plain Anna Nagar search. The AI Overview for the “best” version of the query names other people.

So I looked at what the named freelancers have that I do not, and the answer was sitting on the same results page.

The freelancer named first has her own website ranking top of the web results, and that website is the source the AI Overview cites. There is a Reddit thread in a freelancing community recommending her by name for this exact search. She appears in the directory lists for the area. The surrounding businesses carry 38 to 112 Google reviews. I have six.

Almost nothing on that list is on her website. It is reviews, community threads, directories, and mentions. Off page SEO decided that AI answer, and off page is exactly the work most small businesses skip because it is slow and nobody sees it directly.

Where AI Overviews and ChatGPT actually find businesses

Every AI assistant answering “who should I hire” pulls from three pools it can read: your Google Business Profile and its reviews, your own website, and everything other people have written about you. The weighting differs by tool, but the pools do not.

The review pool. Count, average rating, how recent, and whether the owner replies. Industry targets for AI visibility talk about 150 plus reviews with a 4.2 to 4.7 average and fresh ones every month [verify]. Most Chennai categories are nowhere near that, which means the bar here is lower and you can actually reach it.

Your own site. AI tools use it to verify you exist, what you do, and where. If your services, area, and pricing are stated in plain sentences, you are quotable. If everything lives inside images and sliders, you are invisible to the machine even when the design looks lovely.

Everyone else’s sites. This is the pool that decides the close calls. Ahrefs’ Brand Radar data from June 2026 puts YouTube first and Reddit second among domains cited by AI Overviews, with Reddit at roughly a fifth of mentions [verify]. Research from SE Ranking found brands with heavy Reddit and Quora mention activity had about four times the odds of being cited by AI tools [verify]. For ChatGPT specifically, reports say around 70 percent of its local business data comes from Foursquare [verify], a directory most Indian businesses have never claimed.

One more number: studies this year report only about 45 percent overlap between businesses winning the Google map pack and businesses appearing in AI recommendations [verify]. Half the Maps winners are missing from AI answers. My own case matches that number exactly.

The off page work that gets you named

Off page SEO means building signals about your business on websites you do not own. For AI Overviews and ChatGPT this is not a side task. It is the main work. Here it is, in the order I would do it for a Chennai business.

1. Make reviews your weekly habit. Ask at the happy moment, send the link on WhatsApp, aim for three to five a week, reply to every one in the language the customer wrote in. Steady beats bursts, and replies are read by the machines too. I wrote the full method in my guide to Google Business Profile optimization in Chennai.

2. Claim every directory that matters, with identical details. JustDial, Sulekha, IndiaMART if you sell products, and yes, Foursquare, because ChatGPT reportedly leans on it [verify]. Your name, address, and phone must match everywhere, letter for letter. AI tools cross check, and mismatches read as uncertainty. While you are in each directory, fix your category and add real photos too, because AI tools read the whole listing, not only the name and number.

3. Earn your way into community threads, honestly. When someone on Reddit or Quora asks for a recommendation in your category, a genuine answer from a real account carries weight for years. Build an account, answer questions in your field with actual substance, and mention your business only where it truly answers the question. Say someone in a Chennai group asks who can run ads on a small clinic budget. A helpful answer with real numbers in it gets saved, upvoted, and quoted for years. Do not post fake recommendations of yourself. Communities delete them, and getting caught looks worse than not being there at all.

4. Get onto the lists people already cite. Search Engine Journal published a 90 day case study on exactly this route into AI recommendations. Every “top freelancers in Chennai” list article that AI tools quote was written by a person you can email. Some charge, some just want a photo and a paragraph. Being on two or three genuine lists puts your name in the exact sentences AI answers are built from.

5. Give someone a reason to write about you. A local business story, a workshop for a trade group, a case study a client publishes, a quote in a Chennai business blog. One real article mentioning your business outweighs twenty directory entries, because someone else chose to write it.

6. Say your own name consistently. Decide what your business is called and use exactly that everywhere: site, profile, directories, social bios, invoices. AI systems connect mentions by matching names. Three spellings means three weak identities instead of one strong one.

None of this needs much money. It needs you to keep doing it every week, and most businesses stop after a month. That is honestly why it works for the ones who continue.

Your website still does the quiet work

When an AI tool considers naming you, your website is where it goes to check. So make checking easy.

State what you do, for whom, and where in plain text on the home page. Answer the questions customers actually ask, each under its own heading, the way this blog does. Keep your service pages honest and specific, with prices where you can, the approach I took in my SEO cost in Chennai breakdown. Add schema markup so the machines get your details without guessing. Keep the site fast on a phone as well, because a page that loads slowly gets crawled less and quoted less.

Notice the order of this post, though. Website work is one section. Off page is the longest section. That ratio is the point.

What I am doing about my own gap

I told you the AI Overview does not name me yet, so it is only fair to show my homework.

I am growing my reviews from six with a weekly ask, publishing one useful Chennai focused post a week on this blog, fixing my directory listings so every detail matches, and answering questions in marketing communities under my own name. Foursquare is next on my list, since ChatGPT reportedly reads it [verify]. No shortcuts, no bought mentions.

I will update this post when the answer changes, whichever way it goes. If you want to check my progress, search “best digital marketing freelancer in anna nagar chennai” and see who the AI Overview names today.

Mistakes that get businesses ignored or banned

Posting fake Reddit recommendations. Moderators recognise a first post that praises a business, and so do the AI companies training on that data. Accounts get banned and threads get deleted, taking the mention with them.

Buying reviews or running review kiosks. Google filters suspicious bursts and its 2026 policy explicitly bans kiosk collection. Filtered reviews help nobody and risk the profile.

Different names in different places. The business called one thing on the signboard, another on JustDial, and a third on the website splits its own identity three ways.

Writing for machines instead of people. Pages stuffed with “best in Chennai” phrasing read as advertising, and AI answers consistently prefer sources that read like information. Write like you talk. It is genuinely the safer strategy now.

Expecting it this month. Mentions age like reviews. The Reddit thread that beat me is ten months old. Start now precisely because it is slow.

What to do next

Three things this week, none of them expensive.

  1. Search your category with “best” in front and read what the AI Overview says. Write down every name it gives and where its sources point.
  2. Count your Google reviews and set a weekly target. This is the single heaviest lever you control.
  3. Claim or correct your listings on JustDial, Sulekha, and Foursquare so the details match your site exactly.

If you would rather hand the whole thing to one person who will be honest about the timeline, get in touch and tell me your category. I will tell you what the AI answers say about it today.

Questions I get asked about AI recommendations

How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?

Build the signals ChatGPT reads: a complete Google Business Profile with steady reviews, a claimed Foursquare and directory presence with matching details, a website that states plainly what you do and where, and genuine mentions in communities and articles. Reports say much of ChatGPT’s local data comes from Foursquare, so claim it [verify].

How do AI Overviews choose which businesses to name?

AI Overviews runs on Google’s normal ranking systems, then summarises the sources it trusts for that question. For “best” and “who should I hire” searches those sources are usually review platforms, listicles, community threads, and the businesses’ own sites. Names that appear across several of those sources get picked.

Does ranking first on Google Maps mean AI will recommend me?

No, and I am the example. My profile ranks first on Maps for my area search while the AI Overview names three other freelancers. Studies this year report only about 45 percent overlap between map pack winners and AI recommendations [verify]. Maps rank and AI mentions are built from different signals.

Is there a schema or tag that puts me in AI Overviews?

No. Google’s documentation is clear that there is no special markup for AI features. Standard schema for your business, articles, and FAQs helps machines read you accurately, but no tag buys inclusion. The selection comes from reviews, mentions, and content quality.

Do Reddit and Quora really matter for a small Chennai business?

Yes, more than most owners believe. Reddit is the second most cited domain in AI Overviews per Ahrefs’ June 2026 data [verify], and the thread that outranks me locally is a ten month old Reddit post. One honest, well placed answer in the right community can work for years.

How long does it take to show up in AI answers?

Think in months. Reviews build weekly, directory corrections take effect within weeks, and community mentions gain weight as they age. A business starting from zero should expect meaningful movement in three to six months of steady work, similar to normal SEO timelines.

Can I just pay someone to get me mentioned?

You can pay for legitimate things: a spot on a genuine listicle, a sponsored local article marked as such, help managing reviews. You cannot safely pay for fake community posts or bought reviews. Those get deleted, filtered, or penalised, and the money is wasted along with the risk.

What should I fix first with a small budget?

Reviews first, always. They are free, they are the heaviest signal in both Maps and AI recommendations, and each one keeps working for years. After that, spend an afternoon making your name, address, and phone identical across your site, profile, and directories. Both cost time rather than money.
